'Sounds and Bright Shadows'
The Marker Hotel, Dublin (Ireland)
This glorious painting by Olivier Cornet Gallery artist Jordi Forniés
was acquired by The Marker
Hotel, Dublin, in 2013. It hangs in the Presidential Suite of the beautiful establishment located at Grand Canal Square, Docklands, Dublin 2.
'Sounds and Bright Shadows' was part of the artist's 2012 solo exhibition 'Espacios'. The Marker acquired a few more works by the artist from this exhibition. One titled 'The Essence of Life' can be admired above the reception desk of the hotel.
"The experience of memory, rather than place, forms 'Sounds and Bright Shadows', another of the large format works, this time with a thick impasto of oil and enamel applied onto a spirited collage of ripped sheet plastic and encaustic laid on the canvas. The title refers to the artist's childhood when he and his brother, a year older than him, used to share a bed - necessary since there were seven of them them in the family. One of his earliest memories was when, as a child of three or four, his brother would be sleeping (the black outlined figure on the left) while he (the alert figure with the huge white-rimmed, wide-awake eye and its smaller companion on the right) was wide awake. He would look up at the ceiling, listening to the noise of lorries in the road, watching the reflections of the changing lights, aware of the ceaseless movement and the sounds of people outside. And he would imagine himself flying high over the city, looking down on the colourful dynamism of the labyrinthine streetscape below him."
