“I am interested in the nature of human experience. Through abstract painting and drawing I try to convey meaning and sensation. Colour, movement and light are the key elements I work with to express both an interior and exterior world. I have a particular interest in the expressive qualities of line and much of my work explores the nature of line. The mark of the human hand is evident in the work and is important to me - something individual to human identity when individuality is in crisis. The work is concerned with our states of ‘being’ in the world, but is as much about the act of painting itself. I work intuitively without a predetermined plan, as I find this creates a spontaneity in the work which holds the energy of its making.
Relationships are central to the work - how paintings relate to each other within a given space, and how we as people relate to paintings. The fundamental language of painting and drawing remains simply one of engagement between the artist and the viewer on an individual human level. I am interested in this one to one communication.”
A native of Dublin, Sheila Naughton is a visual artist living and working in Waterford. She was educated at NCAD Dublin and Ecole Cantonale des Beaux Arts et d'Arts Appliqués, Lausanne, Switzerland. She is an abstract painter. Sheila has exhibited widely throughout Ireland since 2010, when a residency at The Custom House Studios in Westport was pivotal in developing her interest in contemporary abstract drawing and painting.
A fellow of the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Co. Mayo, Sheila recently had a solo exhibition “Synergy” at the Ballinglen Gallery during May and June 2026. Sheila is currently working towards a solo exhibition at Waterford Gallery of Art (Municipal Gallery) in spring 2027.
Sheila is an associate artist (i.e a member of our AGA group) at the Olivier Cornet Gallery in Dublin.
'Presence' marks a clear departure from the 'The Darkest Night', the artist's first solo exhibition at the gallery, which had its roots in the universal lived experience of the Covid pandemic.
